Just a reminder that benefit coverage for dependent children ends at age 21, unless they are enrolled in school full time.

To confirm your child’s status as an eligible overage dependent, please complete an Overage Dependent Confirmation Form. You will be confirming that your child is a full-time student attending an educational institution recognized by the Income Tax Act, and is entirely dependent on you for financial support. At any time Sun Life may request supporting documentation to confirm your child’s status.

This form must be completed for the full school year or each semester, for a dependent student who is between the ages of 21 and 25.  All benefit coverage will end for your dependent(s) at age 25, even if they are still enrolled in school at that time.

Please refer to your Group Benefits Plan booklet for full details.

Please send your completed Overage Dependent form to Natasha Cowan in Payroll by August 31, 2020 or before your child’s 21st birthday.  Otherwise, coverage for your dependent will start the day the form is received in Payroll.  Scanned emailed copies are preferred.

Confirmation of benefit coverage

Your dependent may be eligible to opt out of their school health plan. The town can provide you with a letter confirming their coverage under your plan.  This letter can be requesting through Workspaces or by emailing me directly.

Is your child studying outside of Canada?

If you have a child who will be studying outside of Canada, an extension of coverage must be requested to maintain their benefits while they are away. The request will need to be done each year they are studying abroad.

In order to be covered under the Sun Life benefits students MUST maintain their OHIP coverage for the time they are away from their home province.  Please contact Service Ontario at 1-866-532-3161 for details.

Please contact Natasha Cowan directly to request an extension of coverage for your child or if you have any questions.

PLEASE NOTE: This pertains to full time, and full time contract employees with benefits ONLY.

July 21 2020

Update to the Sunlife Group Benefits, now available on the Benefits page.

The ‘Contact Us” form has been updated.  If you have questions, or concerns, please complete the form. The completed form will be directed to one of the stewards who will follow up with you.

May 20, 2020 – CUPE UPDATE RE: OMERS

For the 3rd time in 4 years, OMERS is pushing a proposal to eliminate guaranteed indexing which, if passed, could allow inflation to erode the value of our pension.

The OMERS Sponsors Corporation (SC) Board of Directors is barging ahead during a pandemic with a vote to eliminate guaranteed indexing on June 24th, a plan that has already been rejected twice. This, despite tens of thousands of us already demanding that they postpone the vote until after the COVID-19 crisis.

Will you add your name to defend guaranteed indexing and a dignified retirement for all?

The OMERS SC Board of Directors is made up of 50% Worker Representatives and 50% Employer Representatives. The proposal to eliminate our guaranteed indexing requires a two-thirds vote to pass. We know the Employer Representatives have been pushing this for years.

If Worker Representatives stand united, we will defeat this harmful proposal and defend our guaranteed indexing. We know we can count on the CUPE Ontario, CUPE Local 79 and OPSEU Representatives to vote NO – but that won’t be enough.

It’s important that the Board Members hear from the workers that they represent. We need to speak out and tell them to stand united and vote NO to eliminating our guaranteed indexing.

If it passes, this proposal will eliminate an important and valuable pension benefit for OMERS members. It will mean OMERS members, particularly younger workers, will have less valuable, and less secure pensions in retirement.

To understand just how bad “Shared Risk Indexing” really is, CUPE Ontario has developed a Frequently Asked Questions which can be found by clicking here.

In solidarity,

CUPE Ontario

Tell the OMERS Board: VOTE NO to eliminating guaranteed indexing

IMPORTANT INFORMATION / GENERAL MEETING

January 6th  2020

Our negotiation and strike aversion teams will convene and discuss how we move forward.

January 7th 2020  – WE NEED YOUR HELP!

We will be holding an information rally between the 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. lunch break. The rally will take place on the corners of Trafalgar Rd and McCraney St.  We request that ALL Union Members make every effort to join the rally.  We will have signs already made, informing the public of the issues we are facing.  You will be required to use your lunchtime break to attend and it will be off town property.

Your participation at this rally is critical! It is vital that we show the employer that we are mobilized and standing together in solidarity.  You are worth it! We need to show everyone—the Employer and members of the public—that we are the ones who make Oakville the most livable town in Canada and that we DO MATTER!

We chose this idea so that we can inform our residents, businesses, and media that the town are not willing participants in bargaining.  We also chose this to show management that as we enter into conciliation on the 8th and 9th of January 2020, our membership are united and that we are prepared to stand together until a new contract is signed.

As a negotiation team we have been working hard on achieving this new contract, however, we are in a place that we need your support.  We need your strength.  We need to show them that we are determined to strike a deal and move forward.

Please come out. Stand with your coworkers, and stand up for yourselves.!

On Monday, September 2 CUPE Ontario members will take part in Labour Day events in communities across the province.

Join your fellow unionists at the Labour Day event in your area.

Amalgamation – this is a hot topic that if passed could effect us all, even if you don’t live in the area(s) that are being reviewed.

Please take a moment and complete the survey and voice your concerns and share your comments about this proposal.

For those who may not be aware, the Ontario Government is looking at amalgamating or “reviewing”  several regional governments.  This amalgamation review has happened in the past and we saw municipalities in and around Toronto (Etobicoke, Scarborough, North York etc) became the City of Toronto. At the same time,  Waterdown, Stoney Creek, Dundas, all merged with City of Hamilton.  The focus today is on, Halton Hills, Milton, Burlington and Oakville, potentially creating the City of Halton. Other regions such has Durham, Niagara and communities in the north are also being reviewed.

To voice your concerns, and to complete the survey please click on this link Ontario Government NewsRoom – Amalgamation Survey
